The Place That Has It All: RAW

There is no shortage of places to visit in Berlin on everyday of the week at any time. You can spend the entire weekend in most clubs (until Monday on holiday weekends), there are delicious places to eat that are open 24hrs (shoutout to all the döner shops), and of course, you’re never out of beer because many spätis never close (should we start calling spätis ganztägig?). Then there’s the place in Friedrichshain that combines all of the perks you love about living in Berlin: RAW.

Full name RAW-Gelände, the title has never been changed since it was owned by Deutsche Bahn – RAW stands for Reichsbahn-Ausbesserungswerk (Reichsbahn Repair Shop). The 8,800 square meter area has a variety of quality clubs, daytime hangouts, and places to eat. Here are a few of the central places that make it a beloved hangout spot any day of the week:

Sunday Flohmarkt

Every Sunday from 9am until organizers have to pry sellers away from their tables there is a Flohmark from end to end of RAW. Browse through second-hand clothing, handmade items, jewelry, international food selections, and more. Maybe you can find an old-timey outfit to swing dance in at Crack Bellmer, happening every Sunday evening.

During warm weather months you can watch films in the open air at Cassiopeia’s Freiluft Kino. When you’re not attending a film screening there are plenty of other reasons to visit. Cassiopeia offers a lovely biergarten, game room, several bars, and a club/concert space. If you’ve got your board with you, check out the Skatehall past the Biergarten before grabbing your beers (admission fee required).

The Swag Jam

If you’ve never been to The Swag Jam at Badehaus you’ve been missing out. Held every Tuesday night, the hip-hop open mic night invites locals and out-of-towners alike to get on stage and show off their singing or rapping skills. Every event is hosted by a guest of honor who performs solo with the live house band. Head there before 10PM for a discounted entrance fee and prepare to be entertained.

Open Air Climbing

Just inside the entrance of Cassiopeia there’s an indoor and outdoor rock climbing gym that is accessible everyday until 11PM called Der Kegel. There are lessons for beginners inside as well as a tower outside for seasoned climbers. Challenge yourself to a thrilling activity that you can do solo or with friends.

Dine and Dance

Looking for a beer garden or indoor space for a sit-down dinner before going out? Grab a locally brewed beer and hearty traditional German food at Schalander Hausbrewerei during your visit to RAW. It’s a great place to dine before heading to Astra Kulturhaus for a live concert or weekend dance party.
